Mission
The Science Leadership Camp prepares participants for a successful future in science careers. This camp provides an integrated approach to leadership for young men and women interested in advancing academically and activating change in scientific environments.
The success and growth of both this camp and the camper who attend it is attributable to the intense reflective nature of the program. An important aspect in the integration of the arts (literature, visual arts, music, etc.) and field challenges (group projects and competitions) with the theory and practice of innovative and creative thinking.
The Curriculum is based on the following assumptions:
Core Areas:
Campers will be challenged to become leaders by learning and reflecting on the dimensions of communication, participating in field challenges while working in small groups, meeting faculty and tour various science labs, attending a career night, understanding global values and how the ever-changing world affects the progress of humanity (and how science plays a role), and byproposing a final project at the end of camp using science and values that may one day lead to solving real-world problems.
See the Reading List before arriving!
The leadership campers will learn within a project-based environment core values of inquiry, collaboration, presentation and reflection. The camp will address the technical and non-technical skills that promote leadership qualities in science. There will be value placed on the focus, discipline and imagination required to make advances in science. Emphasis will be placed throughout on effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Campers will investigate several core areas: materials science, risk and failure, innovation and creativity, team building, debate, career preparation, sustainability, and public speaking.
Leadership camp will empower students to formulate solutions to real world problems, often a requirement for senior Capstone projects.
