When is it?

19 June 2017 to 28 July 2017

Genetics and Genealogy Detectives

June 19th- June 30th
Cost: FREE + $100 administration fee

In this two-week camp, campers will use case studies to learn about inherited traits, evolution, and anthropology. Through this camp, which is a project partnership between campers and researchers, we hope to discover ways to help students have a positive experience with science. Because of this, we are very interested in recruiting students from a variety of backgrounds, even if they have not always had the best experiences in science classes! We will also be looking at student attitudes about the science they are studying.  Note: Some campers may be asked to participate in an extended component of this research.

Finding Your Roots: Unscripted

Camp: July 10th- July 14th (all campers)
WPSU Filming at Home: July 15th - 21st (select campers)
Cost: FREE + $100 administration fee

This two-week camp is a project partnership between campers, some campers’ families, and WPSU, the local PBS station. The purpose of this camp is to produce a documentary and video of an innovative approach to teaching and learning. The camp is split into two parts: a week on-campus, and a week off-campus, back at home. Again we are looking for a broad range of students who will be comfortable with cameras and lights and being interviewed for broadcast.

We will give your parent/guardian a voucher to “redeem” on line at 23andMe.com, once camp registration is completed. During camp we will use a small sample of information from your DNA test to talk about some of your traits, like hair/eye/skin color, smell/taste perception, lactose intolerance and caffeine metabolism, with other campers, and on camera. You will also begin to do some genealogical research to learn about your family members, their traits and traditions.

During the second week off-campus, WPSU will select a few campers and their families for interviews outside of the classroom as they continue to investigate their genealogical histories. WPSU hopes to "follow" campers and their families as they discover the genetic and genealogical stories, not unlike the PBS show "Finding Your Roots.”

Finding Your Roots

July 17th- July 28th
Cost: FREE + $100 administration fee

This two-week camp is a project partnership between campers and researchers, so campers will be helping us to study student attitudes about science as they participate.  Because of this, we are very interested in recruiting students from a variety of backgrounds, even if they have not always had the best experiences in science classes.

Campers will complete a DNA test before camp. We will give your parent/guardian a voucher to “redeem” on line at 23andMe.com, once camp registration is completed. During camp we will use a small sample of information from your DNA test to talk about some of your traits, like hair/eye/skin color, smell/taste perception, lactose intolerance and caffeine metabolism, with other campers. During camp, campers will discuss several topics including inherited traits, evolution and anthropology. Campers will also conduct genealogical research to learn about family members, their traits, and traditions.

Note: Some campers may be asked to participate in an extended component of this research.
