What's covered?

Join Penn State faculty and staff on this guided interactive journey of the material science research process, from initial concept to implementation. Campers will work on a unique project focused on the design, development and feasibility of functionalized nanowires as a cheap and versatile gas sensing device. Gas sensing has a wide range of applications from environmental safety to bio-diagnostics. Campers will have the opportunity to explore some of the world class characterization techniques we utilize to probe for answers and fabrication tools we use to engineer solutions. Key steps along this research process will be highlighted through group challenges, interactive exhibits, open discussion and live demonstrations. Beyond the tangible materials and instrumentation, Penn State scientists hope to bestow upon these students a sense of awareness to the challenges that face humanity and what they can do about it.
